About

Melina Garcia of Union City was stunned to learn that 21% of the city’s residents—mostly immigrants—were living below the poverty line. Determined to turn that reality into an opportunity for change, she envisioned orchestral music as a powerful vehicle for social transformation. In 2012, she partnered with the City of Union City and the Union City Board of Education to launch the United Children’s Music Project (UCMP), beginning with just 54 preschoolers and a handful of papier-mâché violins in a “Paper Orchestra.”

Now based in—and in partnership with—the Township of Weehawken, UCMP has blossomed into a vibrant, tuition-assisted after-school music program serving over 120 children and youth annually, ages 3 to 18, from Union City, North Bergen, Jersey City, Weehawken, West New York, and beyond. Classically trained teaching artists, along with specialists in jazz and other genres, guide students from their first notes on paper instruments to mastering real strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

Melina has led this grassroots nonprofit from its inception, never taking a salary and devoting herself wholeheartedly to her mission: to inspire academic achievement, build life skills, and foster community through the transformative power of music.

In recognition of her unwavering commitment and tireless advocacy, Melina was recently awarded a $25,000 prize.

UCMP offers more than just high-quality music and orchestral instruction—it provides holistic support through mentorship and cultural enrichment activities. Students receive up to 24 hours of low-cost instruction each month, free instruments, and regular opportunities to perform across the NJ/NY metro area. UCMP students have earned placements in prestigious programs and institutions including Interlochen, the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program, the Ravinia Seminario, and the YOLA National Festival.

With a sliding scale tuition model, UCMP ensures that no child is ever turned away due to financial hardship.
