In 1972 Lillian Gallagher of Lakewood opened the first group home in the State of New Jersey and NJ now has over 700 group homes and many believe it’s a result of her pioneering work. In 1982, Lillian opened her home to five men with very special needs, they lived together as a family for 17 years until Lillian’s health declined. Lillian remains their “mother” and advocate. Currently is the Executive Director of the Ocean County Chapter of ARC. She helps place the disabled into workable living situations and believes in integration and inclusion for all.
